Slashdot and Experts-Exchange.com are run under the same ideal. Everyone can write and everyone has something to say, but those people who write something that people care about are much more valuable and interesting. Critics (movies, music, automotive, etc) should operate under the same principle. Citizen reviewers could review anything they want, with readers choosing to subscribe to any of those different writers. Those reviewers who consistently deliver a point of view that people want to read would climb up the "ego" ladder, possibly moving into a paid writer role.
